Hook-wire Guided Biopsy in the Detection of Early Breast Cancer

Abstract
Clinicaians have been in a dilemma due to approach to a nonpalpable breast lesion. This problem have been solved by hook wire guided biopsy.
From june 1989 to June 1992, 24 needle localization breast biopsies for nonpalpable mammographic lesion were performed in our hospital.
Among them, cancer was identified in 6 case(25%). Mammographic findings in needle localization biopsies were as follows calcification 14 cases(58%), a mass 4 cases(17%), a mass with calcification 6 cases(25%).
Cancer was identified in 21% of the biopsies done for calcification(3/14), 25%) of those done for a mass(1/4), 33% of those done for mass with calcification(2/6).
The average tumor size was 1.0 cm, and there were no positive axillary lymph node in those patients undergoing axillary lymph node dissection.
This study highlights the necessity of the necessity of an aggressive approach toward suspicious lesions found on mammography.
